A Note from Mira

Hey I’m Mira! Guess you’re here because my video made sense to you.

It leaves us with a whole lot of questions, doesn’t it? We love to be useful to others, we love to be needed (even if we only admit this to ourselves!) because it gives us a sense of meaning, of purpose. There is much work to be done, and we are the capable ones who get it done. And yet- this nagging fear doesn’t go away, does it…?

The fear that although we do so much for others, we have no one we can really trust to be there for us when we need it. That if we stopped spinning in crazy circles trying to please everyone, then they would leave, and we would be miserably alone. It’s what you call a Catch-22, I guess.

  • I feel secure when I’m needed, but is there anyone to meet my deepest needs?

  • And if I stop being useful, if I give in to this exhaustion or refuse a request for help, then would anyone love me just for being me? Just for being Mira? Exhausting, isn’t it?

There is a story in the bible of a woman just like us, her name was Martha. When Jesus and his disciples landed up at her home as an unexpected guest, she went all out to be the best possible host. Martha worked hard to feed the tired travelers a nice hot meal, she rushed to clear up the house, and serve drinks. She felt useful, but also quite anxious that everything should be perfect for her guests.

Martha was extremely annoyed to note that her sister Mary was engaged in a deep conversation with Jesus, doing nothing at all, except to focus on what he was saying.

She complained to Jesus that Mary should have been helping her out in the kitchen instead. Jesus’ response took Martha by surprise: “You are anxious and upset about many things, but Mary has chosen the better thing to do. It is actually the one most important thing,” he said.  Martha wondered what could be better than working hard to please the son of God!! Wasn’t it important to focus on being a good person, on being the best version of herself? It took her awhile to realize that Jesus wanted her friendship more than anything else.

He wanted her to know that he loved her and accepted her, not because of what she achieved, but because she was his child. God loved her, and all of humanity, so much that even before we acknowledged him, or obeyed him, he took the first step – he sent his own son into our broken world so that he could prove his love for us.

He wanted to make sure that we got the message- that his love was unconditional. No strings attached. No list of do and don’ts to be followed before we could be accepted. He loved us first.

“While we were sinners”, the bible says, “God showed his love for us” in the most extreme form “by dying for us.” Someone had to take the punishment for our sins, and God volunteered to do that, by sending his own son to take the blame, to die instead of us, so that we could have eternal life instead of the death that we deserved.

So what does God require from us in response? He does not require a pilgrimage or sacrifice. He just wants us to accept that He is the one we need. The only one who can save us from a life of meaninglessness. He wants us to accept his friendship, and help us navigate life.

So put aside those to-do lists, and find rest in his friendship.
